The UC Riverside Advanced & Integrated Manufacturing (AIM) Hub recently shared its vision for advancing manufacturing education, research, and industry collaboration with manufacturers, educators, and workforce-development leaders at the Manufacturing Council of Inland Empire (MCIE) annual meeting in Fontana.
Held at the InTech Center at California Steel Industries, the meeting brought together manufacturing organizations from across the Inland Empire and Southern California. Participants represented organizations ranging from specialized machine shops and large manufacturers to community colleges, training centers, and workforce-development organizations.
The gathering provided an opportunity for industry and education leaders to discuss how manufacturing is changing and the skills engineers and technical professionals will need to succeed in an increasingly connected and technology-driven industry.
During the meeting, Kavan Hazeli, professor of mechanical engineering and founding director of the Advanced & Integrated Manufacturing (AIM) Hub, presented the hub’s vision for connecting advanced manufacturing education and research with the needs of industry.
Hazeli discussed the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI), automation, data-driven manufacturing, smart manufacturing and digital twins — virtual representations of physical systems or processes — in modern manufacturing. These technologies can help manufacturers improve productivity, quality and flexibility while changing how products and manufacturing systems are designed, produced, monitored and optimized.
Their adoption also creates a growing need for engineers and technical professionals who can combine traditional engineering knowledge with emerging digital capabilities. Manufacturers increasingly need professionals who understand areas such as AI and machine learning, data analytics, automation, digital twins, advanced manufacturing processes and integrated manufacturing systems.
The AIM Hub seeks to help address that need by bringing together industry, academia and the regional manufacturing workforce. Through applied research, education, industry partnerships, workforce development and hands-on learning, the hub aims to prepare engineers and manufacturing professionals for the evolving demands of advanced manufacturing.
“The future of manufacturing requires more than new technologies — it requires engineers and manufacturing professionals who understand how to integrate these technologies into real manufacturing environments,” Hazeli said.
Building relationships with regional manufacturers is central to that effort. Direct engagement with companies of different sizes and specialties can help the AIM Hub identify real-world manufacturing challenges while connecting industry partners with UCR expertise, research capabilities and educational resources.
The MCIE annual meeting provided an opportunity to expand those conversations with the regional manufacturing community. As the AIM Hub develops, it aims to strengthen partnerships among UCR, manufacturers, colleges, training organizations and other stakeholders while supporting a workforce prepared for smart, connected, AI-enabled and sustainable manufacturing.
